My fiancé, Andrew Simons, is running for Secretary of State in Wyoming as a Democrat. We got a phone call from a guy who identified himself as a pro-life Catholic who was considering voting for him, but wanted to know how he felt about abortion.
Andrew’s answer: “Well, I can understand that’s a pretty important issue to you. I guess you won’t be voting for me then, because I’m pro-choice.”
The voter thanked him for his honesty and was taken aback by it.
He could have easily pandered, but he didn’t. That’s why he’s awesome.
Ahhh thank you! I go to a tiny little school in the middle of nowhere Iowa, which you'd kind of expect to be progressive because we have marriage equality here, but nooooot really. The administrators and staff/faculty here are fantastic, but the students are idiots. I just started a "Secular Student Alliance' for non-religious students here and it was this huge controversy about how "THE ATHEISTS ARE SO INTOLERANT OF US THEY HATE GOD OMG THEY'RE GOING TO KILL US" and I just....facepalmed.
I'll have to check out your podcast when I get a chance. You're like my new favorite Tumblr-er...I'm a Psych major, so when I saw "Cognitive Dissonance" I kind of freaked out. And then, you know, equality stuff you posted, Regina Spektor, etc...it's all good.
Anyway, I'm excited to get to know you. I'll stop being a creeper now. :)
Totally not a creeper. The creepers are the ones who post about how much they hate me, and I think, “Dude, you don’t even KNOW me… I feel bad for the people you actually know.”
I always picture those people getting soup instead of salad in a diner somewhere and flipping shit.
Good on you for starting the SSA. We have one here, and they had “Stone an Atheist Day” by having people fling water balloons at the officers of the club. They’re growing some balls now.
It’s mostly the students here, too. I have run into many who think Obama is a Kenyan Muslim. We also have the Dick Cheney International Center. No joke. My fiance and I organized a protest of that. You can read about it here.
I’m glad there’s others out there who dig what I post. Thanks for the follow :)
I'm sorry, but I need to unfollow you. As a Christian, I believe homosexuality is a sin and you profanely promote this sinful lifestyle.
Why do you post so much about this? You're condemning yourself to Hell no offense.
Why do I post so much about the GLBTQ community and the discrimination and intimidation it faces? (Paraphrasing, I know)
Because there’s people like you out there - no offense.
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’s sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
I was raised Catholic and retained the whole social justice lesson thingies the nuns taught me in catechism. Take your self-righteousness elsewhere - it’s a real buzzkill.
A 14 year old girl on rollerblades was getting ready to march in the Maple Leaf Parade with the LGBT Resource Center’s float, she was carrying a rainbow/American flag hybrid. But it got ugly when Mark Schneider ran up, grabbed the flag, pushed her and screamed, “Go to a country where they will hang people like you.”
What the fuck? Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!
An 18-year-old violinist at Rutgers University jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge after posting a short note on Facebook. Two fellow students are accused of using a webcam to broadcast footage of the freshman having sex with another man.
Seriously. No more.
More than 10,000 people have signaled their support on a Facebook page set up to honor the suicide victim.
Seth Walsh, a California teen who spent the last 10 days on life support after attempting suicide over relentless bullying because he was gay, died today. He was 13 years old.
Seth’s family took him off life support this afternoon, reports KGET-TV.
A memorial service honoring Seth will be held on Friday, October 1, at 3:30 p.m. PDT at The First Baptist Church in his hometown of Tehachapi, CA.
Seth was found Sunday, September 19, unconscious and not breathing, and it appeared he had tried to hang himself from a tree branch, according to police reports. He was rushed by helicopter to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.
According to reports, Seth was openly gay and was taunted by bullies for years, at school and at a local park.
92 percent prefer Swedish model to US model when given a choice
Americans generally underestimate the degree of income inequality in the United States, and if given a choice, would distribute wealth in a similar way to the social democracies of Scandinavia, a new study finds.
For decades, polls have shown that a plurality of Americans — around 40 percent — consider themselves conservative, while only around 20 percent self-identify as liberals. But a new study from two noted economists casts doubt on what values lie beneath those political labels.
According to research (PDF) carried out by Michael I. Norton of Harvard Business School and Dan Ariely of Duke University, and flagged by Paul Kedrosky at the Infectious Greed blog, 92 percent of Americans would choose to live in a society with far less income disparity than the US, choosing Sweden’s model over that of the US.
No fucking way…. 92%? I’m confused - did they not understand what was being asked? Seriously, this makes me a happy sort of bemused.
(_|_) I'm mooning you (_|_)
Are you really getting married? I thought you were married to a guy I went to engineering school with. Not surprised though because that guy was a cocky asshole. We used to ask if he was a fan of Regis and Kathie Lee when we'd get annoyed.
So question then: Why are you so cool and why are you not single?
I think I'll moon your ex-husband (?) instead because I live in Gillette, ciao.
Um, okay. So thanks for mooning me…
Yes, I’m really getting married. I’m not commenting on the rest other than you posted enough that I believe you and my ex-husband must have been acquainted at one point ;)
I didn’t realize I was cool, and I’m not single because I’m in love with my fiancé, Andrew, and we’re getting married on June 4th, 2011.
So uh, have fun mooning my ex-husband, but I don’t suggest doing it in public. Wouldn’t want a charmer like you to get a charge for indecent exposure.
Once upon a sunny Montana morning, a man sitting in a breakfast nook looks up and sees his wife being choked to death in the garden outside. He himself chokes on his hash. He ogles the scene. He twitches as though to rise, but his fat shakes and his sweat beads and he fails. He's terrified. He set a gun out for this but can't rise to run for it. His wife is looking her killer in the face as she dies open mouthed, head whipped back and forth by the neck. Do you play Butthole Surfers or Missing Persons?
That’s a tough one, but I’m leaning towards Butthole Surfers - probably “The Shame of Life.” It’s that delightfully off-kilter style. Maybe “Pepper” but I think “The Shame of Life” would be best.
That’s not how civil rights work… ANY oppressed group - truly oppressed, not “OMG it’s so hard to be a white man” oppressed - is being denied a civil right in some way. To vote, to marry, to own land, etc.
Goddamn. This is what I posted the whole “Derailing for Dummies” for - people like her. An anonymous donor wants to bring her to the University of Wyoming in response to the federal civil rights lawsuit that allowed Bill Ayers to speak.
You went to law school, Ann, you know better than this.
“And what do you think? Gay soldiers are getting something out of the deal? ‘Hey I’m totally gaming the system. All I gotta do is go to Afghanistan for 18 months where a bunch of people are going to try and kill me, but on the plus side, I might just catch a glimpse of some dude’s weiner in the shower. Really.”—Amy Poehler “Really” (via tlmonahan)
Just follow this step-by-step guide to Conversing with Marginalised People™ and in no time at all you will have a fool-proof method of derailing every challenging conversation you may get into, thus reaping the full benefits of every privilege that you have.
The best part is, you don’t even have to be a white, heterosexual, cisgendered, cissexual, upper-class male to enjoy the full benefits of derailing conversation! Nope, you can utilise the lesser-recognised tactic of Horizontal Hostility to make sure that, despite being a member of a Marginalised Group™ yourself, you can exercise a privilege another Marginalised Group™ doesn’t have in order not to heed their experience!
Read on, and learn, and remember… you don’t have to use these in any particular order! In fact, mixing them up can really keep those Marginalised People™ on their toes! After all, they are pretty much used to hearing this stuff, so you don’t want to get too predictable or they’ll get lazy!
This is the guidebook of every internet troll, especially those that like to troll places like Jezebel, STFU Conservatives, STFU Teabaggers and the Casper Star-Tribune.
The newspaper comics page: some find it to be innocuous, even at times irrelevant. But there’s a growing concern among a certain segment of the country that the comics page is out of step with mainstream values, if not an outright cesspool of treasonous, pinko propaganda. So in the interest of fairness and balance we present comics reinvented by “Tea Party cartoonist Joe Smith” — with a little help from Ward Sutton.
