“Unfortunately, a lot of young folks haven’t had the opportunity to really understand how the economy works, and what it takes to put people to work in real jobs, and why we have banks, and what banks do. It’s a very understandable sentiment. If you don’t find a job, and you can’t see rising incomes. You’re going to be angry and looking at someone to blame.”—
Mitt Romney to WBTV in Charlotte, N.C., discussing the protests at Bank of America.
Oh, we young people don’t understand “real jobs” and “what banks do,” yeah?
I argue we do. There’s a lot of us working two and three minimum wage jobs, going to school, graduating, barely surviving, or some combination of the above.
We’re consistently screwed by people like you, Mitt, who gambled with our parents’ retirement, who ensured most of us can never retire, who foreclosed on our families, who laid us off in the name of savings, who pissed away bailouts in executive bonuses and back slaps, as you grin in your expensive suits and tell us repeatedly that we DON’T GET how it works, as you reach into our back pockets for yet another checking account usage fee because we can’t keep a minimum balance, let me tell you…
WE GET IT.
We are fully proletarianized, working ourselves to the bone, paying the same tax rate as you, and praying to whatever is sacred that we do not get sick or injured because we are one paycheck or missed unemployment check away from completed ruin, while you and your cronies line up for another spin at the roulette wheel, your wallets fat from the products of our intellectual and physical labor.
FUCK YOU and your patronizing condescension. Fuck you with the all the fucks my exhausted self has left to give.
Just a question: Do you remember doing your show last week? Because it was groovy loopy and I want to know the song you played when you were talking about the lab school kids.
Yes, I do remember doing the show. And I suspect my epic no-sleep stretch is the reason anon is asking this question. The last two days of finals week, I was awake for roughly 42 hours. By the time I went on-air, I had been awake for 36 hours and my husband had to drive me to and from my show. I felt like I probably could drive, but had enough cognitive functioning left to realize it was a really bad idea.
Anyhow, your song. Checking the recording, it was “Daylight” by Matt & Kim.
San Francisco teachers voted overwhelmingly to support a strike Thursday night, with 97 percent saying yes in what was the first of two required votes.
"Last night the teachers of San Francisco sent a message loud and clear to the San Francisco Unified School District," said Dennis Kelly, United Educators of San Francisco President, in a statement after votes were counted Friday. "It is time for the district to stop seeking unilateral cuts and sweeping program changes, and to start treating the teachers and paraprofessionals with respect and to recognize what we have done to keep this district afloat."
About 1,900 teachers voted. A second vote required to give union leadership the ability to call a strike has not been scheduled.
Fuck yes. The union is pushing back on more cuts to the education budget and layoffs. Way to send a message.
“While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads. In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage. Or that – as great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ worldview.”—
Bristol Palin, lecturing the world on the sacredness of marriage.
For fuck’s sake…
So, to paraphrase Tina Fey on SNL, should marriage be a sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers? Far be it for me to judge here, but if we’re looking for guidance on the “traditional family” and the role of fathers, I do believe the last stop on the advice train is Teen Mom prototype Bristol Palin.
radscum are, well, scum, but I do think you have a point about not asking the oppressors how fight against oppression.
And that’s the biggest point I wanted to make with that. However, I lacked some serious context, considering it appears these “radical feminists” have an asterisk: *anyone other than white cis-women need not apply. Working class will be reviewed strictly.
I just got a few texts from my friend, Anita, who considers herself a radical feminist. She’s dating a trans woman named Liz. She wrote: “But it’s about no-one defining femme at all… It’s about the right of ind. to define their femmeness. Or not be femme. Whatever. You can be femme with a cock. You can oppress with a clit. WTF is this shit?”
Are you seriously sticking up for radical feminists right now? You're fucking doing that right now? Check out some radfem blogs (I suggest you start with Tumblr's own bugbrennan then move your way over to the Pretendbian Wordpress for a quick overview of the kind of people you're defending) & see if you still see slamming radscum is wrong.
Yikes, okay, waded into this debate without full context. If these are the folks OP is talking about then yeah. Not cool.
I’ve known radical feminists in my life who would be appalled by that kind of transbashing and, well, misogyny. That’s not what the movement should stand for, and that’s not equality.
Just writing in to say that you're awesome and it sucks that you live in a red state, haha. Keep kicking ass.
One way to disrupt the machine is to become a cog in it. That’s one justification for staying here. Another is that my husband and I have made some fab friends here fighting on the right side of history.
Affirmative Action which gives you an advantage over white people by discriminating against us.
You have a black President who was born in Kenya. This is a first for our country since all presidents HAVE TO BE born here in the…
Well, if everything’s so awesome for POC, I invite OP to take Tim Wise’s challenge and take a pill to make their skin appear black. It can be done. Thus far, nobody has taken him up on it. Tweet him at @timjacobwise to volunteer.
Do it, OP.
Find out how awesome your life will suddenly become. People just throw shit at your feet for being a POC.
Oh, they don’t? Life’s not a daily parade of free advantage by virtue of skin color? Oh, oops, I forgot… </sarcasm>
