Cognitive Dissonance

"Democracy! Bah! When I hear that I reach for my feather boa!" - Allen Ginsberg

100 notes

You know what really gets me, as a Christian, is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and then some senseless crazy act of a derelict takes place. Some of us happen to believe that when our founders talked about guarding our virtue and freedom, that that was important. Whether it’s John Adams saying our Constitution was made only for moral and religious people… Ben Franklin, only a virtuous people are capable of freedom, as nations become corrupt and vicious they have more need of masters. We have been at war with the very pillars, the very foundation of this country.

People say … where was God in all of this? We’ve threatened high school graduation participations, if they use God’s name, they’re going to be jailed … I mean that kind of stuff. Where was God? What have we done with God? We don’t want him around. I kind of like his protective hand being present.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) proving he’s completely insensitive, opportunistic douche on The Heritage Foundation’s “Istook Live!” show.

1. Where was God, indeed…

2. This does not justify your Islamophobic witch-hunt with Rep. Michele Bachmann, no matter how much you think it does. No one knows the motivation of James Holmes just yet. How about you let SWAT un-booby trap his apartment before hinting at motivation?

3. He was shooting in a crowded, dark movie theater with some sort of gas in the air. Holmes was reportedly dressed in SWAT/riot gear, with a bulletproof vest on. If you think you can take a shot in conditions like that, you’re crazy. I asked a pal who’s a cop about this. He said he doesn’t know many officers who’d take that shot with so many civilians in the way. As he put it, in a crisis like that, the focus is evacuation first, elimination second. But sure, pop off a few rounds, let the cops think you’re with the shooter — especially if you hit a fellow patron.

4. Nowhere did he even express sympathy. Gohmert just sermonizes with his “some of us happen to believe…” bullshit, then basically blames those who aren’t Christians for things like the Aurora shooting and insinuates we’re in a Holy War. No, Louie. Not this time. Not ever. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this shooting, not just the Christians.

What happened was horrific, tragic, unexpected, and sickening. If you believe these events happen because God isn’t protecting this country — only because a principal at a public high school can’t say a Christian prayer at graduation and God’s name can’t be plastered everywhere — then your God is a fickle asshole who’s guilty of quite a bit more than withdrawing his protection from the U.S.

As you explain your version of your God, Louie, it sounds like he’s a bully at best, and a terrorist at worst. I wouldn’t want to believe in a deity whose very protection depended upon lip service declarations of devotion inspired by terror.

You know what really gets me, as a human being, Louie? Attacks by people like you who don’t share your beliefs and use smug superiority complexes to say “Told ya! Now believe in my God before he kills you too!” before the dead can be buried. That’s what gets me.
