Rick Santorum on religion and governance

aggressiveretreat:

cognitivedissonance:

Rick Santorum: The Constitution is the how for the US, Christianity is the why. The US is the only country where rights come from God. If the government gives you rights, the government can take them away.

Fuck…

Is this a direct quote? You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

It’s a paraphrase. Here’s what he said from the transcript:

SUZANNE BASS, JACKSONVILLE RESIDENT: Suzanne Bass, I’m an attorney in Jacksonville. Welcome to the great city of Jacksonville. My question, how would your religious beliefs, if you’re elected, impact the decisions that you make in the office of the presidency?

SANTORUM: Faith is a very, very important part of my life, but it’s a very, very important part of this country. The foundational documents of our country - everybody talks about the Constitution, very, very important. But the Constitution is the “how” of America. It’s the operator’s manual. The “why” of America, who we are as a people, is in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.”

The Constitution is there to do one thing: protect God-given rights. That’s what makes America different than every other country in the world. No other country in the world has its rights — rights based in God-given rights, not government-given rights.

And so when you say, well, faith has nothing to do with it, faith has everything to do with it. If rights come… If our president believes that rights come to us from the state, everything government gives you, it can take away. The role of the government is to protect rights that cannot be taken away. And so the answer to that question is, I believe in faith and reason and approaching the problems of this country but understand where those rights come from, who we are as Americans and the foundational principles by which we have changed the world.

Live coverage of tonight’s CNN Debate

My coverage of the CNN debate tonight. Yes, there was another one.

It’s getting ridiculous in terms of the introductions - each debate is introduced as the most important one. This debate may actually be relatively important - it’s the last one before Florida’s primary, and with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich tied in the polls, they needed a strong night. The result? Eh, not so much.

Romney managed to get some hits in on Gingrich, and vice-versa, but the consensus on Twitter seemed to be that it was less strategic debate tactic and more tantrum-throwing. Either way, I predict Florida is Rick Santorum’s last stand. He’s running out of cash. The sweater vest market is small, and there’s only so many you can sell to each person, y’know?

And the discussion over colonizing the moon… Statehood for the moon. Seriously. Don’t miss that.

The next debate isn’t scheduled until February 22nd, so we have at least a month ‘til the next one.

If you missed tonight’s debate, catch it here:

Live-blogging the Southern Republican CNN Debate

And then there were four…

Here’s my live coverage of tonight’s debate. Not as painful as last time, but I do miss Perry’s bumbling. Newt Gingrich lambasted moderator John King for asking about allegations he requested an open marriage from wife #2, Mitt Romney sputtered over taxes, Rick Santorum launched some serious volleys at Romney and Gingrich, and Ron Paul got testy when he felt ignored.

John King: But some of the questions about when you release your taxes have not come — the president has raised them; his campaign has raised them - you’re right on that - but so have some of your rivals up here. Speaker Gingrich has said you owe them to the people of South Carolina before they vote. Governor Perry made that point as well before he left the race. Why not should the people of South Carolina before this election see last year’s return?

Mitt Romney: Because I want to make sure that I beat President Obama … I — I obviously pay all full taxes. I’m honest in my dealings with people. People understand that. My taxes are carefully managed and I pay a lot of taxes. I’ve been very successful and when I have our — our taxes ready for this year, I’ll release them.

Mitt Romney, in one of the most telling, jaw-dropping exchanges of the night at the South Carolina Republican CNN Debate

Let me reiterate: Romney says if he releases his tax returns now, he may not beat Barack Obama. If he thinks that will quash speculation about his taxes, Romney’s sorely mistaken.

Also, don’t forget about GOP Bingo! Cards are here.

Since I didn’t have time to update/replace Rick Perry spaces, take any space that mentions Perry as a free space. It’s redistribution of the free spaces so everyone has more. Because I am more of a socialist than Obama. </sarcasm>

I’ll miss Perry’s performances. Someone make an emotional montage saying goodbye, please.

Here’s the link itself to the album. Hover your mouse in the right-hand corner of each image to download the card. As always, submit your card here or via email to meglanker@gmail.com. GIF prizes awarded for the most bingos on one card, first bingo, most bingos across all cards, and blackouts (Note: Can lead to alcohol-related blackouts).

What better way to celebrate a day named for Martin Luther King, Jr. than to watch a bunch of old rich white men discuss how they’ll “save” America? Now with the only adult on stage *cough* Jon Huntsman *cough* out of the race, I’m sure it’ll be interesting. Will Newt finally vanquish Romney with his mind lasers? Will Perry strike out on an adventure by counting to our? Watch it and see!

These cards are also good for the CNN debate on Thursday night. I’m only going to change them if someone else drops out.

Live-stream for the Fox News debate is here. I’ll be live-blogging the debate @meglanker on Twitter.

Spread the word and good luck! Remember, we all lose at GOP Bingo, so let’s lose together.

Did Michele Bachmann leak classified intel?

In the CNN debate over national security, Michele Bachmann made an eyebrow-raising declaration. From The National Journal:

Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann serves on the House Intelligence Committee, so her comments on Pakistan’s nuclear program represent either a news-making leak of previously unknown classified information or another in her recent series of seemingly-random, and highly inaccurate, public comments. During the CNN debate, Bachmann said that 15 Pakistani nuclear sites were vulnerable to jihadist attacks, and that six of the sites had previously come under some form of Islamist attack. U.S. intelligence and military officials believe that Pakistan has 15 nuclear sites, but no U.S. official has publicly said that all of the sites were vulnerable to militant attack or confirmed that any of them had previously come under any form of jihadist attack.

Hmmm… knowing Michele Bachmann, either could be likely and it’s quite terrifying that she has access to classified information.

BLITZER: So just to be precise, is it ethnic profiling, religious profiling? Who would be profiled?

SANTORUM: Well, the folks who are most likely to be committing these crimes. If you look at — I mean, obviously, it was — obviously, Muslims would be — would be someone you’d look at, absolutely. Those are the folks who are — the radical Muslims are the people that are committing these crimes, as we’ve — by and large, as well as younger males. I mean, these are things that — not exclusively — but these are things that you profile to — to find your best — the most likely candidate.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, endorsing racial profiling in tonight’s debate. He was also very concerned about radical socialists and militant Islamists joining forces.

Yep.
