Feminism is itself a challenge. Feminism is a challenge to the way things are in the world. It is by definition an oppositional movement, because it’s trying to accomplish something. I’ve never felt like feminism was a consciousness raising effort in isolation. Everything about feminism is about getting something in the world to get better for women, and to get the world to be less stupid on gender bifurcation terms.

But we can have no confidence that the Republicans will seize this opportunity. That’s because the Republican Party may no longer be a normal party. Over the past few years, it has been infected by a faction that is more of a psychological protest than a practical, governing alternative.

The members of this movement do not accept the logic of compromise, no matter how sweet the terms. If you ask them to raise taxes by an inch in order to cut government by a foot, they will say no. If you ask them to raise taxes by an inch to cut government by a yard, they will still say no.

The members of this movement do not accept the legitimacy of scholars and intellectual authorities. A thousand impartial experts may tell them that a default on the debt would have calamitous effects, far worse than raising tax revenues a bit. But the members of this movement refuse to believe it.

Conservative columnist David Brooks, “The Mother of All No-Brainers,” New York Times, July 5, 2011

Maddow Blog highlights Brooks’ marvelous analysis today. It truly is a wonder that so many elected officials within the GOP simply refuse to believe they are wrong, even when presented with non-partisan reports, or even analysis from their own side. To me, it’s mind-boggling. It’s like facts are now something with inherent liberal bias. If Congress tried to pass a resolution stating clouds were composed of droplets of water, the GOP would howl with indignation until Democrats agree to include a stipulation that clouds are formed from the tiny tears of aborted babies or something similar. I swear, it’s not because they believe it, it’s because they can.

Shit that exists: A fracking coloring book.
Rachel Maddow’s blog breaks it down:

One drilling company, Calgary-based Talisman Energy, already had their own unique argument in the works promoting the supposed safety of the practice. And that is where the coloring book comes in.
The Marcellus Shale formation is named for the town in New York State where there’s a lot of it — the same New York State where fracking is banned through at least next summer. But Talisman Energy would have us believe “Talisman Terry,” the pro-fracking dinosaur, who tells us that the process is just setting that natural gas “free” from the underground rocks that imprison it! That bad, bad New York State, keeping all that natural gas in the ground!
(More sunshine-and-rainbows talk - literally - about fracking can be found throughout the coloring book, which you can download here [pdf].)

I thought we libs were the evil ones indoctrinating the wee ones… </sarcasm>

Wisconsin GOP signature collectors pass out free shots for signatures. It worked for George Washington…for reals

AlterNet has the details:

In fact, Republicans apparently had to give out free shots of booze to get enough signatures against the Democrats. Maddow has all the details on that hilariously sad development, including audio of some WI voters receiving their free booze while, it seems, having no idea what they’re being asked to sign. (“What are we recalling?” “It’s all political stuff. We don’t know.”)
