First Lady of Texas: Abortion is “a woman’s right”

Meanwhile, in Texas…

Anita Perry takes a stance on reproductive rights completely at odds with her husband, Gov. Rick Perry. Good for her for not just paying lipservice to batshit Republican laws that actually harm millions of people in Texas.

Often, the wives of male politicians are seen as extensions of their husbands and act accordingly — mind you, it’s not entirely unlikely they’re looking to avoid being ripped apart in the press for NOT acting as an extensions of their husbands or for having their own policies and ideas. Please see Hillary Clinton as FLOTUS for an example.

Yes, come check out Texas. Check out a state that ranks dead last in the percent of its population with high school diplomas. Come check out a state that is last in mental health expenditures and workers’ compensation coverage. Come check out a state that ranks first in the number of executions, first in the number of uninsured, first in the amount of carbon dioxide emitted and first in the amount of toxic chemicals released into water. Texas certainly has some attractions for business, and California certainly needs to work harder to create a friendly place to start companies and grow jobs. But California is creating businesses all the time, partly because of our natural assets – great weather and stunning mountains, beaches and deserts – and an excellent although underfunded system of higher education.

If we invest in that system and protect our environment, our state will continue to create companies such as Apple, Google, Hewlett Packard, Oracle, Craigslist, Yelp, Twitter, Sun Microsystems, Genentech, Cisco, Intel and Qualcomm, and the list goes on and on.

Gov. Jerry Brown, visiting a UPS distribution center Tuesday to celebrate a new fleet of all-electric vehicles, suggested that media hounds find something else to cover than the Perry ads. “It’s not a serious story, guys,” the governor told reporters. “It’s not a burp. It’s barely a fart.”

The Sacramento Bee fabulously smacks down Gov. Rick Perry’s run of “Move to Texas” ads in California and suggests California help out Texas high-school students with a book drive to increase their graduation rate.

Texas loses Medicaid funding in effort to spite Planned Parenthood

Last Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that they would be informing the State of Texas that the state would lose basic health and family planning services funding from Medicaid because it is in violation of federal law. The state wrote Planned Parenthood out of the state’s Women’s Health Program, a Medicaid-waiver program. As of today, Texas has been officially informed that the funding is lost, via this letter from HHS official Cindy Mann, director of the Center for Medicaid and State Operations (CMSO)…

An HHS official told reporters today:

"Medicaid law is very clear; a state may not restrict patients" choice of providers of services like mammograms and other cancer screenings, if those providers are qualified to deliver care covered by Medicaid. Patients, not state government officials, should be able to choose the doctors and other health care providers that are best for them and their families. In 2005, Texas requested this same authority to restrict patients’ choices, and the Bush Administration did not grant it to them either."

The war on women’s health just resulted in 130,000 casualties in Texas.

Yep. This guy, who STILL jokes about his inability to count to three, thinks he knows best for Texas women.

You know, I was thinking about Texas for law school…

GOP Debate Bingo for Jan. 19th

Don’t forget kids, there’s a debate tonight on CNN. The fun starts at 8 PM EST. I’ll be live-blogging on Twitter. Follow me: @meglanker

Also, don’t forget about GOP Bingo! Cards are here and pasted below. Since I don’t have time to update/replace Rick Perry spaces, take any space that mentions Perry as a free space. It’s redistribution of the free spaces so everyone has more. Because I am more of a socialist than Obama. </sarcasm>

I’m going to miss Perry’s head-scratching debate performances. Someone make an emotional montage, please.

Submit your bingo cards here, or email them to meglanker@gmail.com.

Cheers,

Meg

Here’s the link itself to the album. Hover your mouse in the right-hand corner of each image to download the card. As always, submit your card here or via email to meglanker@gmail.com. GIF prizes awarded for the most bingos on one card, first bingo, most bingos across all cards, and blackouts (Note: Can lead to alcohol-related blackouts).

What better way to celebrate a day named for Martin Luther King, Jr. than to watch a bunch of old rich white men discuss how they’ll “save” America? Now with the only adult on stage *cough* Jon Huntsman *cough* out of the race, I’m sure it’ll be interesting. Will Newt finally vanquish Romney with his mind lasers? Will Perry strike out on an adventure by counting to our? Watch it and see!

These cards are also good for the CNN debate on Thursday night. I’m only going to change them if someone else drops out.

Live-stream for the Fox News debate is here. I’ll be live-blogging the debate @meglanker on Twitter.

Spread the word and good luck! Remember, we all lose at GOP Bingo, so let’s lose together.

On GOP Debate Bingo, Obama commentary, and Rick Perry

"Barack Obama is a communist" commentary on a story about Perry leaving the race, and now my day is complete. And really? Anyone…? Ooh, the possibilities are endless.

Dennis Kucinich?

Bernie Sanders?

Ooh, or Buddy Roemer? Y’know, someone who’s actually running? If Perry’s gone, can Buddy take his place?

Anyhow…

BREAKING: Rick Perry to end presidential bid today

NPR Politics has this:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is going to drop out of the Republican race for the White House, sources are telling The New York Times and CNN.

NPR has not independently confirmed the news.

We’ll pass along more as the story develops. Perry is expected to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET.

Interesting. Just yesterday, Perry spokesman Mark Miner told CBS News, “Pundits aren’t going to decide this race, the people of South Carolina are going to decide this race. We are in this primary to win it and will continue campaigning.”

Stay tuned, kids.

Live-blog of this morning’s NBC/Facebook Debate

In case you missed it, here’s my coverage of this morning’s NBC/Facebook debate. It was more fiery than last night’s debate. This one also shows Rick Perry to be a morning person - he was more coherent than usual. Or maybe my expectations are just that low.

Anyhow, a more involved postmortem of the two debates will be up tonight. In the meantime, you can check out this morning’s coverage, plus my live-blog of the ABC/Yahoo debate from last night:

The next debate is January 16th at 9pm ET on Fox News. It’s on to South Carolina for this one. The New Hampshire primary is this Tuesday. We’ll see if we still have a line up of six in just two days.

Live-blogging NBC/Facebook Debate!

cognitivedissonance:

Instead of going to church, stay home and play GOP debate bingo! The Meet the Press debate will be at 9 AM EST, but check your local listings here. In some locations, it’s on at 7, 8, and 10 AM. I’ll be starting at 7 AM MST. Live-stream is here.

I suggest not turning bingo into a drinking game unless you need a little hair of the dog or you want to be seriously judged by people around you - but IT IS always five o’ clock somewhere. Facebook info here. This one is moderated by David Gregory.

Participants: Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman

Follow me on Twitter for live-blogging: @meglanker - If I get thrown in Twitter jail, I’ll start up on Tumblr.

Follow my husband, Andrew Simons, as he live-blogs at the Twitter feed for the PAC he directs: @Equality_WY

I’ll be writing a postmortem of the two debates tomorrow. See you folks at 7 AM and don’t forget to submit your bingo cards!

Live-coverage of last night’s debate here. What do you think is going to happen this morning?

We’ll find out in 15 minutes…
