Students called 'n' word, chased through woods on field trip

Imagine sending your child on a class trip, then finding out she and her classmates were called the “n” word and chased through the woods. It was part of a slavery re-enactment that some parents said crossed the line.

One couple said their 12-year-old daughter came home from the field trip with horror stories, and now they’ve filed a complaint against the school district.

"I ask that you imagine these phrases being yelled at our 12-year-old child and their friends," parent Sandra Baker said at a Hartford School Board meeting. “‘Bring those (n-word) to the house over there. (N-word) if you can read, there’s a problem. Dumb, dark-skinned (n-word). How dare you look at me?’"

Baker said screaming that at children on a field trip is abuse.

"They intentionally terrorized them and abused them on this field trip," she said.

WHAT. THE. HELL.

‘Gun Appreciation Day’ chairman: Slavery wouldn’t have happened if slaves were armed

brashblacknonbeliever:

invisiblelad:

“I’d like to address the Martin Luther King Day charge,” Ward replied. “I believe that Gun Appreciation Day honors the legacy of Dr. King.”

He added: “The truth is, I think Martin Luther King would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history. And I believe wholeheartedly that’s essential to liberty.”

Roach pointed out that Ward’s argument was ridiculous because “slavery means that you are a possession just like a gun.”

“So to say that if slaves had been armed — that’s just theater,” she remarked. “There is selfish, self-serving intent in a Gun Appreciation Day. I’ve spoken to thousands of people, they are outraged that you would plan your event two days before an American icon — a day that we celebrate nationally — who was murdered, he was slain by a rifle.”

This is is beyond the most ridiculous argument I’ve ever heard. During slavery, black people with weapons were considered a threat. After slavery black people with weapons were considered a threat.

If you think law enforcement was as supportive of 2nd Amendment rights for its black citizenry as it was others in the Jim Crow era…I’d suggest you take a gander at this PBS documentary (it takes place in my fair state, North Carolina) called “Negroes with Guns”. If anything it evidences the excessive double standard on how gun rights were applied quite recently.

“The truth is, I think Martin Luther King would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history. And I believe wholeheartedly that’s essential to liberty.”

I literally got a fucking headache after reading that shit.

Do these people think at all before they speak?

Are they missing that mental filter that prevents normal people from saying shit like this?

I’d say that’s a distinct possibility.

An old lady recognizes her boob-doodle on the news and goes to visit Bill Paxton on his rock and roll treasure boat, where they make her watch a graphic CGI reenactment of the Titanic sinking (I believe the working title is Hey Granny, Fuck Your PTSD). Then she tells her story. Which is hella not pertinent to treasure-hunting, unless by “treasure” you mean “three hours of nonsense, garbage, terror, death, and delightful Italian stereotypes.”

Turns out, that old lady used to be Kate Winslet, and one time she rode a big boat named Titanic. But she wasn’t too happy about it! “It was the ship of dreams to everyone else,” she says. “To me it was a slave ship, taking me back to America in chains.” Yes. Because imprisonment, rape, and unpaid forced labor are just like having to marry Billy Zane and live in a fur-lined bon-bon palace for-literally-ever…

After dinner, Leonardo says, “Time for me to go row with the other slaves!” Again with the slave thing. YOU GUYS ARE HELLA NOT SLAVES. PLEASE READ A BOOK.

"I Re-Watched Titanic So You Don’t Have To. You’re Welcome." by Lindy West on Jezebel.

This is the best review of Titanic that will ever be written. Not only for the excerpt above, but for lines like these:

  • "Here’s the thing about Titanic, and the reason 15-year-old girls love it so much: James Cameron is a 15-year-old girl. All of the characters are either 15-year-old girls in disguise (‘Parents just don’t understand!’ ‘Waaah, make the boat go faster!’ ‘I know we literally met 20 minutes ago, but I love you with a suicidal fervor!’), or the kind of goofy caricatures that 15-year-old girls would write if we let 15-year-old girls write our blockbuster screenplays. It’s She’s All That on a Boat, only with Kate Winslet as Freddie Prinze Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio as that girl who isn’t famous anymore, and also everyone freezes to death in the north Atlantic at the end.
  • "In an act of defiance, Kate Winslet sneaks downstairs to party with the simple folk. And look who’s down there dancing a jig! ‘Aaaaaaaay! It’s-a me, Fabrizio!’ Fabrizio treats everybody to all-you-can-eat breadsticks and then invents the mafia."
  • "Finally, even though she knew Bill Paxton was searching for the necklace, and he hella patiently listened to her stupid story (it’s like she writes erotic fan fiction about herself), that old lady just goes and drops it into the ocean at the end!!! Like, seriously, old lady? First of all, you’re a dick."
  • "Then, to wrap things up, there’s a dream sequence where the ghosts of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio walk down the Titanic’s grand staircase and everyone on earth applauds for no reason. You know who are the only people that think the world owes them a round of applause? Fifteen-year-old girls and billionaire directors who own submarines. I rest my case.”

Now, it has taken all these years for many Americans to understand that that gravity, that mistake, took place before the Civil War and why the Civil War had to really start changing America. What Barack Obama seems to want to do is go back to before those days when we were in different classes based on income, based on color of skin.

Sarah Palin, reminding us Wednesday that she doesn’t know shit about history.

Love the insinuation that the big problem with slavery was income inequality based on color of your skin — not the whole SLAVERY thing, amirite you guys?!

I swear… this woman has got to be doing some kind of avant garde performance art. Right?

RIGHT?!

What is her “thought” process? I imagine it’s something like, “You know what? I betcha the first black president misses when people like him were enslaved. They had it so good, with their free room and board… Wait… THAT’S SOCIALISM!”

And then she starts talking.

Bryan Fischer is ranting about a gay man, R. Clarke Cooper, heading up finance and fundraising for the RNC. R. Clarke Cooper is the executive director for the Log Cabin Republicans.
Fischer’s on a roll with this whole false analogy of the GLBTQ community, the GOP, and slavery. Seriously, wtf? I don’t get how this logically works - even in a bigot’s mind.

The Bible doesn’t condone the type of slavery that was cruel. Didn’t God Himself lead the Israeli slaves out of Egypt after a series of plagues He poured down on Egypt? That demonstrates His feeling about racial slavery. The slavery the Bible allowed did not resemble the racial slavery that plagued America in past centuries. The Bible gives instructions on how slaves should be treated.

Doris is batshit insane, (seriously, Google her) but this time… wow. I picture her doddering around her knickknack filled home in her housedress, occasionally stopping at the kitchen for a nip of sherry (but just a nip, it’s before noon) and contemplating her weekly Letter to the Editor. Usually she insists we’re a Christian nation, but this time, maybe she had more than a nip of that kitchen sherry.
