Regarding Fox News’ airing of a suicide live

Here’s my thoughts right off the bat — while these images might be upsetting to some people, in our gun-soaked culture, why not show the results of firing a gun? This kind of scene is shown nightly on network television and in graphic detail in movies. Granted, the lighting isn’t as pretty and there’s no immediate cutaway in real life, but if we’re going to celebrate the right to own and carry weapons, why not show the results? Doesn’t this naturally follow from a 24 hour news cycle, where everything is sensationalized and nothing is truly discussed?

To me, this is like the prohibition on showing flag-draped caskets. God forbid we see the results of war and weapons. In a bizarre way, it almost feels reminiscent of the end of Fahrenheit 451 — only the man was not killed by police. In the book, a stand in for Guy Montag is killed live on television. Shep Smith apologized, but I’m not sure there’s much to apologize for here, other than sensationalizing the chase itself. The airing of the man’s suicide was not stopped by their delay.

And why should it be? Regardless of the delay, the victim is still dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The car chase and suicide happened publicly. That this man sought a permanent way out — along with thousands of other Americans each year — should offend our delicate sensibilities more than what Fox News aired today.

Feel free to disagree or agree, or discuss. Perhaps I’m a cynic.

More information here and here.

Simone Back Announces Suicide On Facebook - And None Of Her Friends Help

Forty-two year-old Simone Back announced her intention to commit suicide in a status update on Facebook—and not one of her over 1,000 Facebook friends reached out in person to help.

According to the Daily Mail, Back, who committed suicide on Christmas Day, wrote in her Facebook status, “Took all my pills be dead soon bye bye everyone.”

What followed was a series of callous posts from some of Back’s Facebook friends. The Telegraph writes, “Some of the Facebook friends posted messages calling her a liar and one said it was ‘her choice’. Seventeen hours later, police broke down the door of her flat in Montague Street, Brighton, and found her dead.”

I don’t care if your friend posts overly dramatic shit all the time. When a person posts something specific, you don’t mock them. You never know when someone is serious or not - especially if you don’t know them well. Attempt to contact the person in crisis and call the police. I have friends who are cops, and they’d much rather respond to a live person and do a welfare check, possibly transporting them to the hospital, versus responding to a call of someone dead and needing transport to the morgue.

A 19-year-old Oakland University student took his own life on campus Tuesday.OU police said the death of sophomore Corey Jackson from Warren is still under investigation. The Oakland County medical examiner’s office confirmed that Jackson’s death had been ruled a suicide.”Any death in the campus community diminishes us all. We know there will be no quick antidote for the pain that Corey’s sudden death has caused, and that only time can heal the sorrow felt by his family and friends,” said Oakland University President Gary Russi in an e-mail to students. “In our mourning, I am hopeful that we will not focus on the manner of Corey’s death, but rather celebrate the life he lived and the people he touched.”
Jackson’s family said he recently revealed to them that he was a homosexual, and that they believe he was bullied over his sexual orientation. They think the bullying led him to commit suicide.

No more. This is what today was about - bringing attention to what happened before he ended his life.

Please, if you’re religious, pray. If not, send positive energy to Laramie, Wyo. tonight. One of our GLBTQ community members needs your support. We fervently hope not to see another name on that tragic list of late. So please, just hope. Reblog this. I believe in the power of a community pulling for one person. Tonight, I am asking you for help on behalf of one person in Laramie, but I know there’s many others out there - even tonight - feeling alone.
If there’s any of you out there feeling alone tonight, you’re not. We are in Laramie, but we are also everywhere. If you need to talk, reach out to the Tumblr community. I answer every message. Call the Trevor Project at 1-866-4-U-TREVOR. They also have LiveChat.

ACTION ALERT! Being bullied? GET HELP: LGBT resources

projectqueer:

Are you being bullied because you are gay or transgender, or because people think that you are? Or do you know someone – a child, a friend, a classmate, a cousin – who is being bullied at school or…

Bullying is never OK. You are not alone (in fact, 9 out of 10 LGBT students report being bullied in school; LGBT students are four times more likely to kill themselves than heterosexual students). It is not your fault. There is help.

Here are just a few resources:

* The Trevor Project. 866 4U TREVOR. thetrevorproject.org. A 24-hour, national help line for gay and questioning teens. Trevor receives about 30,000 calls a year. If you are being bullied or are considering suicide, call or visit Trevor’s website now.

Trevor also offers “TrevorChat,” a free, secure online messaging service for counselling between 4 p.m. and midnight Eastern time. The organization’s Trevor Space, a monitored social networking service for gay youth, has about 13,000 registered users.

“So if your town has only 300 people in it, you’re not alone,”spokeswoman Laura McGinnis told the Associated Press.

* AThinLine.org. Are you being cyberbullied? Someone stalking you online? MTV’s website and iPhone app can help you recognize and stop digital abuse. athinline.org

* STOMP Out Bullying. Focuses on reducing bullying and cyberbullying. Here are really good suggestions if someone is currently bullying youstompoutbullying.com

*HalfofUs.com. If you’re fighting depression or bullying or struggling with thoughts of suicide, this site has resources, a quiz, videos and a community to help. halfofus.com

* The National Center for Bullying Prevention. Helps to promote awareness and teach effective ways to respond to bullying.Pacer.org/bullying

* The Matthew Shepard Foundation runs Matthew’s Place, an online community and resource center for LGBTQ youth.matthewsplace.com

* GLSEN, which counts about 4,000 Gay-Straight Alliances in schools out of 12,000 public school districts. GLSEN works to eradicate bullying and bias in schools. glsen.org

Campus Pride is non-profit organization of student leaders and groups of gay students and their allies, including an effort focused on fraternities and sororities,lambda10.org.

* Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG.A national support, education and advocacy organization. Support group meetings are available through PFLAG chapters for families.pflag.org

Two lesbian youth found dead in Orangeville - Latest News Roundup

narglesinthemistletoe:

gregoryythomas:

The bodies of girlfriends Jeanine Blanchette, 21, and Chantal Dube, 17, were found in a wooded area in Orangeville on Saturday.

After ruling out foul play and a connection to a high-profile murder in September, police are investigating the possibility of a double suicide, reports CTV (watch the video for more details).

The Toronto Star has more:

The tragic story began on Tuesday [Sept 28] when two friends received “goodbye” phone calls from Jeanine and Chantal and reported them to police. The young women also left behind goodbye letters to family members.

Jeanine’s mother Ellen Blanchette said the police responded quickly that day, but then didn’t take their concerns seriously as the week progressed. Instead, Ellen said, Orangeville police and OPP seemed to think the young women had run away.

On Sept 29, Jeanine’s mother drove to her daughter’s apartment, where she found receipts for hundreds of antipsychotic pills, reportsThe Star.

Discussion about queer youth suicide has swelled in recent weeks, in the wake of six reported cases in the United States. Determined to reach out, columnist Dan Savage has created a viral video campaignto let queer youth know that it gets better.

omfg. this is horrible.

THIS MUST STOP.

We have just lost a 5th young soul this week - that we know of - who is either gay or the victim or gay bullying. The 5th suicide in less than three weeks and the 3rd death just this week alone!
