thetpr asked: Is there a concern in your area?(or cheyenne) right now because of what happened in Aurora? Seems like there's more guns than people in wyoming

I’m honestly not sure. If by security, I don’t know, but I imagine police departments all over the country are on high alert for copycats.

If by concern you mean empathy and sympathy, yes. We’re shocked, saddened, horrified, and our heart goes out to our neighbors to the south.

Wyoming has an oddly unique gun culture that is a holdover from the days of Buffalo Bill Cody and Calamity Jane. Most people I know own guns (I don’t), and that includes people on the right and left. The Wyoming Democrats gave out stickers that said, “I’m a gun-totin’ Wyoming Democrat!” at the last Democratic convention.

Any restriction on gun rights is seen as an intrusion on liberty, but conservative Wyomingites were quick to condemn those on their side who complained that restriction on shootings during fire bans were adverse to liberty.

The incidences of gun-related violence in Wyoming are largely self-inflicted via suicide. Our murder rate is very low.

But we’re not perfect. We have hunting accidents every year that could have been prevented by hunter safety training. We have one of the highest suicide rates in the nation, partially because the most common method is suicide by firearm — that’s a near 100% completion rate by method.

An armed society may be a polite one, but it’s almost a polite hostility. When a gun bill was being considered, the Wyoming Gun Owner’s Association members sent “We’re watching you” postcards to the more liberal legislators in what appeared to be a thinly-veiled threat.

We do have more guns than people. That’s becoming increasingly common. And concerning.

thetpr asked: You probly don't know, but I've been following you on here for a loong time lol but never realized you were from wyoming, I follow you mostly for political things but you have a dope blog. And I used to live in wyoming actually, I just made a post like an hour ago about wyoming actually haha so I just thot that was crazy. (btw I lowercase the w cuz I hated it there lol)

Hahaha, that explains it! And thank you, I’m glad you enjoy the blog.

I alternate between loving and loathing Wyoming sometimes. The politics can be maddening, and I miss the big cities. But I also love being 10 minutes from anywhere in town, low tuition, and gorgeous views.

We’ll see how much longer we stay here. Andrew and I don’t want to live in Wyoming forever, that’s for sure. It’s not for everyone, especially when Laramie becomes a frozen tundra of windy sadness for winter… I’m not sure this place was ever meant to sustain life.

And the politics, man…

As a retired Wyoming rancher once said, “Reality’s never been of much use out here.”
